Sharpe Thinking currently offers four workshops and individual mentoring. PLEASE CLICK ON THE TITLES FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT EACH.

1. Sustaining Peak Performance

This two-day workshop* (six two-hour workshops are also available) teaches the key personal skills necessary to flourish in today’s complex environment.   There is ongoing support via the internet with peer group coaching and regular updates to encourage the practice and development of the newly acquired skills.

Participants will learn how to:

  • go from easy distraction to more focus and productivity
  • move from constant worry about work, or a sense of numbed resignation, to a self-assured life of variety and learning
  • resolve conflict more easily with challenging people at work and home

2.  The Values of the Mace

The silver Mace is engraved with the values of “wisdom, justice, compassion and integrity”. It sits in full view of the Parliamentarians when the Scottish Parliament is in session. It is a reminder of the values the people expect its representatives to uphold in their deliberations on the nation’s welfare. Scotland would benefit if more leaders practiced these values be they in the public, private or third sectors.

This two-day workshop facilitates leaders and aspiring leaders in developing these key values in their everyday lives.

Prior attendance at a Sustaining Peak Performance workshop is necessary for admission to this advanced leadership workshop.

Participants will learn how to:

  • move from habitual, knee jerk, reactive thinking to more inspired, thoughtful, wise decision-making based on wider interests and higher values
  • learn from the mindset, intuition and additional skills of renowned leaders
  • understand moral values  as a function brain balance
  • integrate technical knowledge with higher values to achieve just outcomes
  • understand  leadership practice from beyond partisan interests

3. A Guide to the Brain on Porn

Six years ago limitless quantities of free, ‘shocking’, explicit videos became widely available to Internet users with high speed connections. There is a difference between Playboy of yesteryear or the occasional erotic DVD, and the Internet today. The easy availability, constant novelty and ratcheting up of intense arousal afforded by hyper stimulating delivery and material a mere click away, can actually change how the brain functions. (Researchers in China did MRIs on the brains of 18 college students who spend about 10 hours a day online and found changes to brain structure).

Multi tasking on the Internet can also make us forget how to read human emotions which is a learned skill and requires practice. Our hunter-gatherer brains have not adapted to the sheer overwhelm of extreme stimuli available today.

This is half-day workshop for HR professionals, counsellors, health workers and educators explains the effect of Internet porn on the brain and what can be done if its use has become problematic for work performance or relationships.

Participants will learn how to:

  • recognise the effects of excessive Internet porn use on behaviour
  • understand how out-of-control behaviour can be modified through adoption of new skills and without the use of pharmaceuticals
  • take steps to help employees or patients deal with it

4. New Start

This two-day workshop is designed for men and women approaching retirement or who have already retired. New Start will give you the tools to transition to this interesting new phase in your life. While mild cognitive impairment can develop at any age, we can reduce the risk of dementia according to psychiatrists and other neurobiology experts by focusing on diminishing the risk factors and precursors to advancing cognitive impairment. No previous knowledge is required.

Based on the latest research into neuroplasticity, the effect of exercise on the brain, nutrition to improve cognitive powers and mindfulness meditation, you can look forward to possibly the best years of your life. Using your mental and physical energies in a productive way will improve your quality of life and attractiveness at this age of wisdom. We will look at how you can use your time effectively, develop new social networks, improve intergenerational understanding and even pass on your skills to others.

Participants will learn how to:

  • move from focusing on past achievements or disappointments to a present identity for today
  • create new networks of friends and colleagues
  • regenerate mental and physical energy resources in a healthy way
  • create a legacy based on the transfer of skills and knowledge to others

5. Mentoring and Executive Coaching

Individual mentoring and coaching provides access to an independent professional person as a sounding board for specific challenges, conflicts or new plans. It is also available following the workshops to assist individuals in incorporating the new skills into their lives.

You  will be able to:

  • explore risk-taking ideas in a safe environment
  • have support through periods of change or stress
  • reveal natural vulnerabilities without fear of censure and learn to turn them to their advantage
  • build confidence over time to reach new levels of achievement
