A Guide to Internet Addictions

Why?

As Internet video games and watching porn become a major pastime for men and women of all ages in our Internet-driven world, it is important to be aware of the unforeseen effects on the brain and, as a consequence, on relationships and work performance. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable as a result of excess use and extreme content as their brains are more malleable. Who?

HR Directors, parents, teachers, counsellors, pastoral guidance advisers, health care professionals, criminal justice officers, civil servants, and anyone who thinks excessive Internet use is affecting them directly or indirectly.

What?

A half day workshop to look at brain function based on the latest research and delivered in an easy-to-understand format. No prior knowledge required. We will be looking at the part of the brain that is the seat of all addictions (behavioural and chemical) and learning about non-pharmaceutical interventions that can ease addictive cravings leading to a change in behaviour. It is non political and non religious, just the scientific evidence to date with practical tools to help deal with this issue.

How?

A series of mini lectures, general discussion and small group exchanges facilitated by Mary Sharpe who has spoken on this subject for the BBC, in national newspapers and magazines, in the City of London, at international conferences and for NATO’s Science for Peace and Security Programme including writing a chapter called “Sex, Drugs and Education” in a recently published book called “Global Security, a Vision for the Future. Addressing the Challenges and Opportunities for Research in the Information Age” (2011) published by IOS press NL.
